Today the 113th annual U.S. Open will begin at Merion Golf Course in
Pennsylvania. Any golf expert will tell you, that you can’t go wrong in picking
one of the big 3 to win the tournament. (Tiger, Phil and Rory). With rain in the
forecast all weekend anything is possible and there is no doubt you will see one
of the big names fall behind early. I’m going to give you 4 other golfers who
have a great chance of pulling the upset at a rain-soaked U.S. Open
Zach Johnson- While Johnson has never been known as a long-hitter, his style of play
will work nicely this weekend at Merion. With the weather becoming a factor, the
big hitters will be left at a disadvantage. Normally Johnson wouldn’t be favored
to win at such a long  course, but I think he could turn some heads if the
weather gets bad.
Graeme McDowell- McDowell has already experienced winning the U.S. Open in 2010
in emotional fashion and he would be a great pick to do it again. He is one of
the few golfers in the field who has played the tricky course before, playing it
just a year earlier. McDowell has shown impeccable accuracy with his driver
which will be key to scoring high with such a wet golf course.
Sergio Garcia- Yes, I said it! I
honestly believe Sergio will be in the hunt on Sunday to finally win his first
major. Leaving the Tiger Woods stuff aside, Sergio actually played well through
16 on Sunday at the Players Championship in May. He may use the riff with Woods
as fuel to finally play well in a Major Championship. As always, Garcia isn’t a
safe bet to compete well, but he’s my sleeper pick.
Luke Donald- Donald has
held the world’s #1 ranking before but is very underrated. He has the special
type of game where he can adapt to any type of course or weather and not have to
change up his style. Donald is a cool customer on the course, but had problems
last year on the green forcing him to miss the cut. Donald has improved the
weakest part of his game, so expect Donald to be active  late on Sunday.

Sergio does an awful lot of talking for someone who has never won a major. I think this is the piece of hardware that Phil finally gets to take home.

I agree I think Phil will hold off the field and win. He has always been one of my favorites, even though I don’t like his hat anymore haha.

Gotta give Justin Rose credit. Merion ate these guys for lunch on Sunday, but he earned it. Phil is running out of opportunities to take home the US Open trophy. Hey, Sam Snead won 80 plus tournaments but never an Open. No shame there.
