Dean Smith passed away this weekend at the age of 83. The former head basketball coach at the University of North Carolina was one of the most widely respected figures in college basketball history. Not just because he was a terrific teacher of the game, which lead to 2 National Championships, but also because of the values he taught his players. They all have spoken about how much he taught them about life, not just about basketball. Ask Michael Jordan how important a man Dean Smith was to him. Success can sometimes be achieved by doing things the right way or the wrong way. Coach Smith could never be accused of doing anything that wasn’t right. The term “legend” is widely over used as we know, but I don’t know of anyone that would question that the term is inappropriate for Dean. RIP Coach.
