Wow, what a week in the NFL!!! We have the Super Bowl contestants finalized, Tom Brady retires and Brian Flores files a discrimination lawsuit against the Giants, Dolphins, Broncos and the league in general. Since we have the Brady farewell tour well underway and to be on-going indefinitley, and the Super Bowl less than 2 weeks away, its more important to address the bombshell dropped by Coach Flores. Because this is bigger than any one players retirement or any single game. Out of the gate, Flores has a right to be angry. The way the Giants handled this situation was an absolute abomination. A complete insult to Flores, by knowing apparently they had already hired Daboll, and still having him come in for an interview to satisfy the Rooney Rule, which itself is a joke. This doesn’t off the bat make the Maras and the Giants organization racist, but it does make them stupid. And this is only one instance of why the NFL is being sued. If the accusations against owner Stephen Ross regarding asking the coach to intentionally lose games and subsequently costing him his job because he wouldn’t comply are true, then the NFL has another major issue with integrity in the ownership of a franchise in their money making machine. Outrageous if true, and there is no place in the game for someone like like Ross. He should be on the Donald Sterling Express out of sports all together. And if Elway and the Broncos front office acted so disrespectfully in not giving the well deserved respect to Flores or the courtesy of telling him he had no chance of being hired, then they need to be called out as well. But the biggest question of all is whether there is an overall issue of discrimination against minority coaches in this league. The numbers would indicate that if only one of 31 teams has a black head coach, then maybe there is something to it. If well qualified coaches such as Flores, or Eric Bienemy or dozens of other candidates can’t get one of the vacancies, we have to for sure ask why. And to have to even consider that this may in fact be true in 2022, we are really at a crossroads between cultural values and respect for our fellow man. I hope this isn’t the case, but none of these scenarios makes it hard to come to any other conclusions. Of course we will address this issue on the next segament of Sports with Mono and Mono, but we need to be open to the fact that this may be a real problem and not an isolated incident. Stay tuned.
