I know, I know………another column about the Masters. But it’s a better story than the NBA playoffs and the Cornhole Championships this time of year. This was a back to “normal” environment in Augusta with the course packed with fans for the first time in two years due to the pandemic. And as always, it did not disappoint. Sure, the main story before the start of the tournament was the return of Tiger Woods after his car accident about 14 months ago. And rightfully it should have been because he was, has been and still is the face of the game. He gave a valliant effort, but the course proved too much as he was never in the mix. One of the reasons he wasn’t able to compete for the trophy as he had hoped, was because there is a new face of golf playing and his name is Scottie Scheffler. All of 25 years old and currently the number one player in the world. A year ago most fans would have said : “Scottie who?” That has all changed and right now he as as popular as Tiger himself. Winning the Masters in dominating fashion will do that. And that was exactly what the kid from New Jersey did! He blew the field away forever joining an elite club of Green Jacket golfers know as Masters champions. He lead after the second round and never looked back by playing the course like he grew up there and showing the golf world why he is the number one player in the world for a reason. His fourth victory in the past two months, but there will never be a bigger win than winning the Masters. It is what every young golfer dreams about when they take up this very difficult game for a living. Well, Scottie has to dream no more as he saw his dream come true on a grand scale and in front of a worldwide audience. And we couldn’t have picked a more worthy young man to be a role model for young sports fans across the globe. Winning at the highest level of your profession is only part of what makes you an idol-worthy. Handling yourself with sportsmanship, grace, class and dignity is what completes the package. And Scheffler seems to possess all of those qualities, just as Jack Nicklaus has done for the past 50 plus years. Of course we will discuss this moment in sports more in depth on the next Sports with Mono and Mono podcast, but wanted to recognize this achievement while it was the top story in the world of sports. Congratulations Scottie on a fantastic victory. You not only won a tournament, you won the hearts of fans from around the world. That is what being a role model is all about.
