Coming off the heels of another legendary coach calling it a career when Coach K stepped down, Villanova coach Jay Wright has suddenly retired from coaching. A big surprise since nobody saw this coming. Coach Wright is only 60 years old and widely considered one of the best coaches in all of college basketball with the likes of Izzo, Bennett, Calapari and Few. We can only hope there isn’t more to the story like a health issue and its just a matter of knowing when the time is right. He really has nothing left to prove as he has won 2 national championships during his twenty one seasons at Villanova and before that with seven successful seasons at Hofstra. So maybe this is a personal decision that is best for him and his family. But he will be missed. Not only because he is a great basketball coach, but someone that actually cares about his players more than his own resume. There has never been any question of his integrity in recruiting, which is more commonplace than we want to admit. He let the opportunity to attend Villanova and play basketball as the only incentive to play in his program. Nothing more than that. There are plenty of other schools that will will break the rules to get a prized recruit. Not in Coach Wright’s world. Just ask any of his former players and they will say they are better men having played for Coach. That is why it is a big loss for the college basketball world that he has decided to step down. These type of coaches are somewhat rare in today’s competitive world of big time college hoops. This is why it’s a big deal when we lose a coach like Jay Wright. A recent 2021 inductee into the Basketball Hall of Fame, we at Sports with Mono and Mono want to wish Coach Wright all the best in his future endeavors as it was an honor to watch him work. Hopefully his impact will be felt for a long time and other future coaches will learn how to handle the spotlight with class the way Coach has done. Good luck Mr. Wright and thank you letting us watch you work!
