Well, the hardest trophy to win in all of sports has finally been won by the Colorado Avalanche, and they had to knock off the 2-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning to do it! A brutally hard fought series against the best goaltender in the world proved to be destiny for Colorado and the best players in the world. They appeard to have the team to do it for a couple of years, but somehow this year was different. They won the Presidents Trophy as the best team during the regular season, but that doesn’t mean much once the playoffs begin. But they rose to the occasion by dominating opponents in the first 3 rounds to face the determined Lightning in the Stanley Cup finals. And although they went up 3-1, the defending champs wouldn’t go down without a fight, winning game five and pushing to “Lanche” to a pivotal game six in Tampa. But Makar, Mackinnon and company proved to be too much and won the Cup for their first championship in 20 years. And the irony here is that the leader of that last trophy winning team is the same guy who built this team, Joe Sakic. A great player and the right person to run this team as there is no substitute for experience. Especially in hockey. Couldn’t be happier for Sakic’s Avalanche to win the Stanley Cup. But don’t count out the Lightning to be back in the mix next season, because they are quite simply……hockey players!
